Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale

Do you have an appreciation for mid-century architecture or Hollywood history?  Then you should take a trip to Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale also commonly known as Valley Ho or Valley Ho Scottsdale!  In recent popular culture, there has been a peak in appreciation of mid-century design, which is most likely related to the popularity of the television series Mad Men.  Mad Men is set in 1960s New York and most definitely shows the the clothing, cars, and other designs of that period that have since become icons, while still intelligently exposing the truth behind such apparent luxuries. —(you caught me, I am a devoted fan of the show). Love for the fashions of different decades comes and goes like waves.  As we enter the second decade of the twenty-first century, the 1960s seem to be our vintage era of choice.

The history of Valley Ho Scottsdale is a fascinating one!  Edward L. Varney, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the hotel which was built in 1956.  Valley Ho soon became one of the most visited hotels by Hollywood movie stars.  Bette Davis, Roy Rogers, Bing Crosby, Frankie Avalon, Humphrey Bogart, Betty Grable, Janet Leigh, Marilyn Monroe, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant and Tony Curtis are known to have stayed there. Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner even had their wedding reception at Valley Ho!

But the hipness quotient doesn’t end there!  Valley Ho closed down in 2001 due to lack of customer interest and was almost torn down entirely before the Westroc Hotels & Resorts company bought it and renovated it from top to bottom.  Now Valley Ho is one of the most popular hang outs of the rich, famous or just plain fabulous.  The interior design is retro chic with a modern twist!  Hotel Valley Ho Scottsdale is now taking advantage of its fashionable, mid-century modern roots.  You can, too, by attending Valley Ho’s nightly “happy hour,” by checking out their spa packages, or booking a room for an in-town vacation.  Check out this gorgeous piece of history!

Scottsdale Artists’ League

by Suze Lewis on July 19, 2010

On the First Tuesday of each month, the Scottsdale Artists’ League gets together at 7 pm to talk about their favorite subject: ART – in all its glorious forms. If you come early, between 5:30 pm and 6:45 pm, you can bring a piece of your own work to be critiqued. The work can be framed and completely finished or can be a work in process – no frame required.

On August 3, the featured speaker is Carole Hillsbery, who has been painting in transparent watercolors and has studied with such notable artists as Robert E. Wood, Charles Reid, Diane Maxey and Ted Nuttall. According to the Scottsdale Artists League Newsletter:

Carole describes herself a “shape maker” starting with large fresh washes of color and working toward smaller, more intense shapes and colors that define the subject. She is an impressionist in her approach to her work which has been described as “meticulously imprecise” as she thoughtfully and carefully builds shapes to represent her subject. A signature member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies and the Arizona Watercolor Association, she has won numerous awards and was featured artist in the Dec 06 American Artist magazine, Mar 10 issue of Southwest Art.

Everyone is welcome to attend.  The meeting is at Scottsdale United Methodist Church, 4140 N Miller Rd., Scottsdale, Arizona

The Scottsdale Artists’ League was founded in 1961 by a group of Arizona artists and have numerous activities, shows, classes and exhibitions for their members. As they explain on their website:

We encourage amateurs, professional and even non-artists to join us. There truly is “something for everyone”. Everyone is welcome to come to a meeting as a guest. We hold juried and non-juried shows and Plein Aire paint-outs, sponsor art workshops, and provide scholarships for worthy art students.

If you have artistic tendencies, or would like to develop some, go to the Scottsdale Artist League website , read the newsletter for all the doings and then join in!!  Sounds like a great group to be linked to if you are engaged in the arts and want to be more connected in your local area.   I give it 5 stars!
